Tried this today and it worked perfectly - nice colour changes over a reasonable time scale. Going to do it with Year 9 top set next week as a nice intro to redox reactions.

This is a lovely reaction and it works well with candy canes and strawberry laces wound around a glass rod. We found that 0.1M sodium hydroxide was a bit too concentrated - the initial purple colour was rapidly replaced with the blue-green of Mn (VII/VI) mixture before we added the sugary sweetie. We found 0.05M NaOH allowed the purple colour to persist for longer, and that it was best presented with an identical beaker without the sugar for comparison.
