Practical challenge

This practical activity explores the chemistry of water and salt in solution. In the first part, students investigate how temperature affects the solubility of a substance in water, and see how this can be used to obtain salt from sea water. In the second part, they analyse a sample of salt containing an additive that may help to support public health.

Practical challenge

In this practical activity students investigate alternative fuels for powering vehicles. In the first part of the activity students compare the energy per gram each fuel provides using calorimetry. In the second part, they complete a table of densities by determining the density of one of the fuels. The final part of the activity requires students to use the outcome of their investigations along with further data on the cost and origin of each fuel to decide on which fuel is the best.
