Developing a theory about reactions of acids

In this practical activity, students will monitor reactions of acids and develop a theory to explain their observations

This experiment gives learners an opportunity to explore some common reactions of different acids with a range of substances, whilst developing their working scientifically skills.

At lower secondary level learners are expected to ‘understand that scientific methods and theories develop as earlier explanations are modified to take account of new evidence and ideas’. As learners move up the curriculum more working scientifically skills are specified. The format of this practical allows them to work in an investigative way to formulate hypothoses, interpret observations, present reasoned explanations and draw conclusions.
