Check students’ understanding of why atoms form ions, and how ionic compounds form by ionic bonding, using this lesson plan with activities for 16–18 year olds.

In this activity, students, in small groups, decide whether statements they are given about the formation of sodium and chloride ions are true or false. By thinking about and discussing the statements, students check their understanding about ionic compounds and ionic bonding.

This activity could be used to assess prior learning.
