Overcome common misconceptions about changes of state and vaporisation with water, a syringe and reduced pressure

Learners come to our classrooms with a variety of pre-existing beliefs about evaporation, boiling and condensation that can inhibit further learning. Even teachers can have confused ideas. Challenge misconceptions with this demonstration of water boiling without heating, which you can use with both 11–14 and 16–18 learners when teaching states of matter, evaporation, vaporisation and dynamic equilibrium. Download the technician notes for health and safety information, a kit list and preparation advice from chemistry teacher Declan Fleming.
