Russian HE faces cuts

A Russian university

25% of universities branded as 'inefficient'

Russian universities are on the verge of massive cuts and restructuring after the publication of an audit of the country's state run universities branded 25% as 'inefficient'. This leaves many universities potentially facing closure, if the Ministry of Education follows the course supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Of the 541 state universities and their 994 branches, 136 universities and 450 regional branches were branded as 'inefficient'. Among the criteria used by Russia's Ministry of Education and Science to assess the universities were scientific activities, external revenue per lecturer, the number of foreign students and the sophistication of the university's infrastructure. The Ministry of Education also has plans to audit private universities.
