The Universities of St Andrews, Birmingham, Manchester, Ulster, York and Leeds will be hosting a four-day Salters' Chemistry Camp between June and August 2007. Open to students at all secondary schools in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, teachers may nominate two Year 10 students (or equivalent) from their school for a camp. Fifty students can attend each camp and where possible 25 boys and 25 girls will be selected for each one.
Imperial College London will be hosting two camps in July aimed at students from schools linked with the Aimhigher Chemistry: the next generation initiative run by the Royal Society of Chemistry.1
'Chemistry campers' get to stay in the host university's halls of residence. The camp's programme offers students the opportunity to delve into areas of chemistry that they have perhaps not covered at school by doing new experiments in the university's chemistry laboratories and watching demonstration lectures presented by the department's staff. Students will also have the chance to visit a local chemical site and get an idea of just a few of the career options open to chemists. In the evenings, students can relax and take part in activities such as rock climbing or ten-pin bowling.
The Universities of Nottingham, Sussex, Bristol and Bath will each host two three-day camps focused on pharmaceutical chemistry in 2007. Supported by GlaxoSmithKline, the programme for these camps will be similar to that of the four-day camps with four practical activities, two of which will be related to pharmaceutical chemistry.
There is a charge of £75 (€115) for each student attending a camp and the student, or their school, will be expected to cover travel expenses. Although the closing date has now passed, places may still be available.
To check availability contact the Camps Administrator, the Salters' Chemistry Camps, Salters' Hall, 4 Fore Street, London EC2Y 5DE (Tel: 020-7628 5962, ext 213; e-mail: camps@salters.co.uk). For further information visit Salters' Chemistry Camps website.
