Demonstrate a dramatic redox reaction in which highly reactive aluminium displaces iron from iron oxide

The thermite reaction is one of the most impressive demonstrations of redox chemistry a learner is likely to see. The current UK explosives regulations prohibit many older methods without an explosives certificate, so CLEAPSS has developed a range of alternative methods which use explosive mixtures in controlled quantities. Use this demonstration outside or in a large lab with good ventilation (and no smoke detectors), to show your learners the reactivity series in action.
