Dates and topics for the first term

All sessions are on Monday 6–7pm

14 September: The nature of substances and chemical reactions

21 September: Electrical circuits

28 September: Distance, speed and acceleration

12 October: Bonding, structure and chemical reactions

19 October: Generating electricity

2 November: Atomic structure and the periodic table

9 November: Newton’s laws

16 November: Making use of energy

23 November: Acids, bases and salts

30 November: Work and energy

Outcomes

By the end of the series, you will:

  • Know common learner misconceptions for some of the fundamental ideas in chemistry and physics
  • Know where to access a range of teaching resources
  • Have different teaching approaches to try in your classroom

Session information

In this series the IOP and RSC will be providing support on the teaching of the crucial foundations of physics and chemistry. We will share ideas about how to teach these topics, teaching resources and, importantly, where the science fits in with the other areas of the curriculum for Wales. Our sessions follow the teaching order for WJEC chemistry and physics GCSEs, alternating between the two units for that science.

We will explore different teaching approaches to the fundamental concepts of chemistry and physics. We will consider common misconceptions and where you can find teaching resources to use in your classroom. We will also highlight links across not only the three sciences but across all subjects in the curriculum.

  • Each session will consist of a presentation, an online task, discussion and time for your questions.
  • We strongly encourage you to use a laptop or tablet to get the most out of the session.

This session is developed in line with our professional development standards.
