Nominations open for the new RSC Education Prizes
The last year has been a particularly challenging one for everyone involved in teaching. If you know an individual or team who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in difficult circumstances, now’s your chance to show your appreciation – nominate them for an RSC Education Prize.
There are two main categories of prize: Excellence in Education Prizes, and our brand new Horizon Prizes for Education. Both categories are open to primary educators and beyond, and you don’t have to be an RSC member to nominate or be nominated for these prizes.
Nature and mental well-being webinar
13 May 2021, 3.30pm (UK time)
As part of our Building a better chemistry culture series, we’re hosting a webinar focusing on this year's #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek theme: nature.
Spending time with nature can have a profoundly positive impact on our mental well-being, but not everyone has equal access to nature and green spaces. It’s important that we recognise and address inequalities so that nature in its many forms can be made accessible to all.
Join our webinar as our expert speakers discuss the connections between nature and mental well-being, as well as the importance of this in building a more inclusive chemical sciences.
New videos promoting diverse roles in the chemical sciences
As part of our Chemistry: Making the Difference campaign we have launched a new set of videos to demonstrate that chemistry is an exciting, impactful, and diverse career option to pursue. Targeted towards young people, this new content features chemists who are ‘Making the Difference’ talking directly about why they chose a career in chemistry.
Share these videos with your students to introduce them to a South African medicinal chemist working on an anti-Malarial vaccine and the Dutch inventor of the first robotic chemist, amongst many others. Find even more inspiration on our TikTok channel.
Engage your students and contextualise chemistry with ‘Chemical allsorts’ fact sheets
Launched by the RSC Secondary and Further Education Group in 2020, ‘Chemical allsorts’ are an ongoing series of short and snappy two-page fact sheets for students of chemistry.
Each sheet features a profile of an interesting chemist, a topical infographic providing real-word context, an element of the month and a puzzle.
Chemistry for All Outreach Grants – putting research into practice
Through our Chemistry for All outreach grants we are inviting applications for up to £25,000 to design and implement a two-year outreach programme for school students.
This grant scheme is open to all organisations that provide outreach activities to secondary school-aged children. Through the fund, the aim is to bring about outreach activities that address the barriers to progression in chemistry, maximising its appeal across diverse social groups. Our in-house team is available to help with applications.
Get up to £3,000 from the Royal Society for an investigative STEM project
Investigative STEM projects are an opportunity for students to develop research, problem solving and data-handling skills, and discover the range of STEM careers available.
Apply before the end of May for up to £3,000 towards an investigative STEM project. In addition to providing financial support, the Royal Society’s Partnership Grants scheme will partner you with a STEM professional from academia or industry. Projects can be run across all key stages, with support available throughout the application process, including additional guidance for those wishing to support students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
