What has the Education Voice and Influence team ever done for you? Plenty, including reworking the chemistry curriculum in England

The RSC Education team exists to support science teachers: and to do that, we want to hear from you

It’s a sunny Friday morning in August, and I’m typing this on a train to London. Not my usual Friday routine, but an enjoyable annual day out at the RSC’s Burlington House. The reason for my visit? To welcome this year’s cohort of chemistry teacher training scholars.

Along with colleagues from across the Education team, I’m eager to meet and get to know these aspiring chemistry teachers. What motivates them, what are they most looking forward to and what aspects of this profession are they worried about? Hopefully, it’ll be an informative day – not just for me as the editor of a magazine they’ll find useful in their teaching lives, but for them as they discover all the ways the RSC can support them. From the opportunities they receive as an RSC scholar (coaching, networking, experience days) through the free teaching resources and teacher support sessions, to the discounted CPD courses they can attend as a Teach Chemistry member throughout their teaching career.

The RSC Education team is proud to support these teacher trainees in England through their training year and beyond, but we’re also proud (and I think, rightly so) to support teachers throughout their careers right across the UK and Ireland. Part of that support is our advocacy work.

Your chance to review the curriculum

I’ve written previously about the advocacy work the RSC Education Voice and Influence team undertake, including the part they play in curriculum development across the nations.

Whether it’s talking to the Welsh government about the range of GCSE science options for learners or conducting the Science Teaching Survey, the Voice and Influence team are using their expertise and insight to further our belief that everyone deserves an engaging, relevant and inspiring chemistry education.

But they can’t do it alone. They need your input and help, too.

Currently, there’s a great opportunity to share your views on the development of the new national curriculum and GCSE subject content for sciences and their assessment in England. Alongside the IOP, ASE and RSB, the Voice and Influence team has been reshaping the chemistry curriculum to ensure it’s fit for purpose, logical, teachable and relevant.  The Department of Education is launching a consultation on this new draft and they want to hear from you. Check the RSC Education website to find out how to have you say
