Resources to support your remote teaching

Our remote teaching support hub is home to all our resources and advice for teaching remotely in one place – with even more support added since the first lockdown.

You can browse teaching materials split by age group (11-14, 14-16 and 16-18) and find ideas that’ll help you continue to teach practical skills remotely. There are also lots of articles on different approaches you can take to remote teaching, such as on-screen simulations, running slideshows and quizzes, and using pre-recorded lessons.

Prioritise your well-being this lockdown

We know that teaching in lockdown isn’t straightforward. We’ve created the teacher well-being hub to help make it a little bit easier for you to look after yourself and, where possible, look out for your colleagues too.

This hub is the place to go for ideas and strategies to boost your well-being and help you maintain good mental health as a teacher. You’ll find articles from contributors like Andy Chandler-Grevatt, covering topics such as dealing with stress and where to look for additional support.

Videos are a great way to keep teaching practical skills remotely

We’ve compiled links to a number of videos that demonstrate common practicals carried out by both 14-16 and 16-18 year olds. These videos could really help your students to visualise important experimental techniques while they’re away from the classroom.

Watch this space: we’ll shortly be adding even more videos covering common experiments for students aged 14-16 soon, with accompanying student worksheets, teacher and technician notes, and integrated instructions.

Online CPD courses for your development

In-person CPD might not currently be possible, but we’re still here to support your subject knowledge and teaching practice. We’ve put together a timetable of CPD events for this term.

RSC education coordinators will be presenting a series of sessions focussing on the EEF’s 7 simple rules for science teaching as well as on topics like using online simulations. We’ll also have live online PD courses delivered by teacher developers covering areas such as teaching redox chemistry, quantitative chemistry and materials chemistry.

Contextualise the chemistry of the pandemic

If you’re looking for aids that explain some of the science behind the vaccines to your students, take a look at these new infographics.

Developed in partnership with Andy Brunning of Compound Interest, these resources provide a visual summary of some of the chemistry at the heart of vaccine development. Available to share are graphics about RNA vaccines and viral vector vaccines – the types of vaccine that have been developed by BioNTech/Pfizer and Oxford/AstraZeneca.
