Do you feel confident teaching the chemistry of sustainability?
Starting 26 October and running until the end of the year, our series of 14 professional learning sessions will support you in teaching sustainability topics in the context of chemistry, and help your students understand how science can empower them to make a difference in the battle against climate change.
Topics to be covered include the science of sustainable fashion, the green credentials of batteries and the chemistry of plastics.
Develop your leadership skills with support from a mentor
We’re continuing our successful mentoring scheme to establish collaborative relationships between Heads of Science/Chemistry and industry colleagues with comparable responsibilities. Participants explore aspects of leadership and apply reflections on leadership to their own school’s context, which could ultimately contribute to improved teaching and learning outcomes.
Priority will be given for teachers working in schools with >25% students eligible for Free School Meals. Apply by 19 November 2021.
New videos from ‘Chemistry: Making the difference’
We’ve launched 4 new inspiring videos of chemical scientists who are working on eliminating carbon emissions. The videos explore emerging careers in sustainable fashion, packaging, lithium-ion batteries and wind turbine coatings. Watch the videos, our new job profiles and share with your learners!
A sustainable chemistry curriculum for a sustainable planet
We’ve asked young people and educators about their views on sustainability and climate change within the chemistry curriculum, and we’ll be sharing the results of these surveys in early November. Keep an eye out on our website and social media channels to find out what they told us – from their views on careers in sustainability, to their opinions on priority topics to cover.
The report launch will be followed by an online panel discussion featuring leaders in education and policymaking.
Listen now: A new podcast on plastics
We've launched a brand new podcast, 'Brought to You by Chemistry', with an initial run of seven episodes focusing on the many complexities of the plastic problem. If your students are interested in how chemical scientists around the world are leading the fight against climate change then this podcast is for them.
The podcast covers topics from life-cycle assessment to waste management and innovation. We bring together experts from science, politics, industry and beyond, to explore some of the biggest challenges we all face today.
A sense of belonging in the chemical sciences
Every chemical scientist deserves to feel like they belong. Simply including people isn’t enough, if they don’t feel they belong they’re unlikely to thrive in our profession.
That’s why we commissioned the first ever study of chemical scientists’ lived experiences of belonging in the chemical sciences. Read our new research based on in-depth discussions with chemists from the UK and around the world.
Why is my chemistry curriculum White?
Rhodes Must Fall and Black Lives Matter have shone the spotlight on the shadow that imperialism and colonialism cast over our society and education systems. This article looks at how students learning chemistry, both at universities and in schools, are impacted by the current White-centric curriculums as well as the effect this may have on students choosing not to continue their study of chemistry.
A frank and timely consideration of our students’ desire for the fingerprints of Britain’s colonial past to be scrubbed from the curriculum, and that this change will require much more than individual teachers reviewing their teaching content – decolonising the curriculum is a job that needs all hands on deck.
