Energy and change

In-person teacher professional development courses from the Royal Society of Chemistry

In this course, you’ll learn the vocabulary needed to discuss energy changes, how to measure and calculate them and why they occur.  Let us help develop your understanding of the different types of energy changes and how to use them in energy cycles. To view the concepts of entropy and free energy by learning what drives chemical reactions, and how to effectively deliver these in your teaching.

Pre-16 courses

Learning objectives

Participants will learn about:

  • the sequence of key ideas and skills that students need in order to understand energy and change
  • ways to support literacy and maths skills through the teaching of energy
  • the common misconceptions and challenges that students experience with energy and change

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • explain how the key ideas in energy change develop and progress at pre-16 level
  • apply teaching techniques that will develop literacy and maths skills, for example system and surroundings
  • identify common misconceptions that arise and use knowledge to address them

Each course is tailored to specific needs, so objectives and outcomes may vary slightly from those given here.

Post-16 courses

 Learning objectives

Participants will learn:

  • the sequence of key ideas and skills that students need in order to understand energy and change
  • ways to support literacy and maths skills through the teaching of energy
  • the common misconceptions and challenges that energy and change presents

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • explain how the key ideas in energy and change develop and progress throughout secondary and post-16 education
  • apply teaching techniques that will develop literacy and maths skills, for example Hess’s Law and Born-Haber Cycles
  • identify common misconceptions that arise, such as those associated with entropy, and use knowledge to address them

Each course is tailored to specific needs, so objectives and outcomes may vary slightly from those given here.
