Plants can help us face the challenges facing Earth and its inhabitants by providing a vast array of useful products (food, fuels, fibres and feedstocks for example). Growing healthy quality crops in high yield is vital. To realise this potential knowledge an understanding of key underpinning scientific principles is necessary, together with the skills to apply them to questions raised by the challenges.
