ASE annual conference 2021

This year, the ASE annual conference is being held online, making it easier to attend than ever before. With sessions across four days from 6 to 9 January 2021, it offers excellent opportunities for professional development and to engage with your education community.

We will be there running sessions across all four days, and really hope you’ll be able to join us; it’s a great chance to get new ideas for your chemistry teaching, meet other chemistry teachers and ask us questions.

Inclusion and Diversity forum

This year, our inclusion and diversity forum will focus on race inequality in the chemical sciences, and the role each of us has to play in ensuring a working culture that is fair to everyone. The virtual event will take place on 8 December, and will feature keynote lectures from Professor Christopher Jackson, Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu, Dr Yalinu Poya and Professor Robert Mokaya.

Inclusion and diversity in chemistry begins at school, and by looking at ways to promote chemistry as a diverse subject, you can help to break down barriers for students of all backgrounds.

This is the time of year when students are making plans for their next steps in education and careers. We have a range of up-to-date resources, written by teachers for teachers, to help you guide and advise them in making their choices.

Our new, up-to-date curriculum maps help you find examples of real-life jobs for topics within your respective GCSE/National 5 or A-level/Highers curriculum, and the jobs profiles will give your students real-world examples of jobs in the aspects of chemistry they enjoy most.

Competitions to engage and challenge your students

Science competitions are a great way to engage students, test their knowledge and encourage them to build on their practical skills. You can also use the competition materials in your lessons, as homework or as part of an extracurricular science club.

Many of these events have had to be cancelled this year, but there are still plenty around; we’ve compiled this handy list of STEM-related events running over the next year - from space-themed challenges to essay competitions - complete with the age ranges and opening and closing dates.

Our report looks at ways that working conditions for technicians can be improved, and how they can be supported in their careers and well-being so that they continue to provide a vital service in our school science departments.
