Understand the challenges faced by students with concealable or hidden characteristics to engage all your learners in classroom research

The underengagement and underachievement of groups who are different in some way from the majority of learners can deter these students from pursuing science in graduate and postgraduate studies. A recent study looked at the experiences of undergraduate students with concealable or hidden characteristics and their science capital. The students felt it was important to have representation and mentoring from people like them. The authors noted that this may be difficult to achieve, but a supportive and non-judgmental attitude from staff still promoted engagement with research.
