On This Day - Jan 30 : Peter Agre was born
He was awarded half of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003 for his discovery of aquaporins, which are proteins embedded in cell walls that regulate water movement. Each cell is comprised primarily of water, and so aquaporins are required to ensure organised water flow through.

On This Day – Jul 17 : Frederick Abel was born
He invented cordite, a type of smokeless explosive made of nitrocellulose. Its use in firearms during WWI was a huge advantage over conventional gunpowder, because it does not produce visually obstructive smoke clouds when fired. Nowadays it is no longer used.

McMillan and his colleagues discovered the elements neptunium (Np) and plutonium (Pu), the two elements following uranium (U) in the periodic table. Their names were inspired by the position of the planets in the solar system - Neptune is beyond Uranus and Pluto (before being declassified as a planet) is beyond Neptune.
